I chose to participate in this program because
of its dedication to patients, education, research, evidence based medicine and
preparing residents for sub-specialist or primary care.
We are treated as professionals and receive excellent benefits.
My clinical training is strengthened by local patients and
patients with uncommon problems who are referred here and motivate
me to learn and read about medicine on a regular basis. Basic
science and clinical research opportunities abound. The internal
medicine residency office is well-equipped to help us arrange
and complete a research project during our residency. I am eager to work
on this portion of the program requirements in order to become a
better clinician-scientist.
There is excellent access to the medical
literature via the on-campus library and intranet resources.
We have a number of sub-specialist ward modules in addition
to general medicine modules that deepens our understanding
of medicine by rounding with sub-specialists in nephrology,
gastroenterology, cardiology, hematology-oncology, endocrinology
and infectious disease. Attending physicians are very open
to training housestaff, acting as our mentors, not just
supervisors.
Another great thing about the Cleveland Clinic Foundation
is that most of our medical records are electronic and we
will continue to phase-in elements such as daily inpatient
progress notes over the next few months. Outpatient notes
and orders are already electronic in an efficient, easy-to-use
program.
Raised and educated in Washington state, it is enjoyable
to be in a new part of the country. I have started to explore
the local parks and traveled to West Virginia and Niagara
Falls; other impressive places remain on my list of places
to see. Urban Cleveland offers great restaurants, music
and theater. Rural Ohio offers serenity and beauty for photography
and relaxation.
Importantly, my resident cohorts are a pleasure
to work with, diverse in their backgrounds and goals for
the future. There is a collegial atmosphere among all residents,
which eases the transition from medical school to residency.
I am happy to have chosen this program and hope you are
able to appreciate what a gem it is, too!
