Teaching Opportunities
In 2004-2005, The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University enrolled its first class of medical students. These students will begin rotating on the wards beginning the 2006 academic year. This will provide residents the opportunity to teach the CCLM medical students during their third year of clerkship. Prior to the development
of The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, students from various medical schools throughout the country and the world were always an integral part of the internal medicine residency program. Residents supervise medical students in the first year of residency. This helps residents transition early from learner to teacher and al
lowing them to better prepare for their supervisor months which start as a GL-2.
- Residents begin supervising interns in the second year of residency.
- The senior medical resident is the team leader on all internal medicine teaching services and also serves as the consultant, as well as a the team leader, for the Medical Intensive Care Unit.
- Senior residents supervise all procedures performed by GL-1 residents and medical students
- Residents (both junior and senior) will give mini-didatic lectures during ward team teaching rounds.
- A typical ward teams consists interns, medical students and a clinical pharmacist.
- Morbidity and Mortality conferences, as well as, clincopathologic conferences and journal clubs are resident lead teaching experiences.
- Each year the r
esident winner of the Division of Medicine’s annual research competition will present their research at a Division Grand Rounds.
- Residents are given the opportunity to lecture at noon conference if they so desire.
- Journal Watch is monthly resident lead teaching opportunity in which residents collectively review current journal articles and summarize the information relevant to clinical practice in a teaching session with their peers.
- Senior residents also serve as mentors and teaching to junior residents for research projects.
Feedback regarding teaching strategies, as well as lectures designed to improve residents' teaching skills, are included in the curriculum.
