In a physician’s career, the most crucial time period is the residency. Residency “molds” a physician into what they become in life, as clinicians. It also forms the “launch pad” in one’s professional progress. Thus, it becomes important in choosing the residency program, which has the capacity and capability to deliver.
The Cleveland Clinic IMRP is one of the best in the country and the faculty has the strength and depth to bring the best out of the residents during their training. Internship is always considered to be the toughest part of the residency, yet it is structured in a way to be less daunting and at the same time, to be a good learning experience and enjoyable. Opportunity to work with very astute clinicians and world renowned researchers are innumerable. There are many world renowned clinicians in almost all the sub-specialty, who take pride in teaching the residents and are willing to be involved in the residents’ research projects. Opportunities are plentiful to be involved either in clinical or bench research and are encouraged from early on. Each resident is assigned a mentor, who is passionate, easily approachable and are actively involved in career development.
I have had training in different countries and not until I came to the Cleveland Clinic, I was able to see multitude of exotic and rare disease conditions. Being a tertiary care center and one of the best hospitals in the US, Cleveland Clinic attracts a diverse group of patient population from all over the world. Also, having a truly “international” physician/resident population, helps to bring the best in all of us and learn from each other, and adds to the strength of the residency program. The learning experience is phenomenal with multiple teaching sessions in a day, from morning report to the noon conference and from bedside teaching to the grand rounds, usually presented by a world renowned speaker. After the in-training exam every year, and the board review course organized by the Cleveland Clinic, taking the real board exam is a cake walk.
Cleveland, as a city has a lot to offer, including excellent restaurants, theaters, and for those interested in sports there are a lot of hiking trails, golf courses and not to forget skiing during winter! There is a very active house staff association organizing social events and discount tickets for the games in the city.
My experience and training at the Cleveland Clinic has been pleasant and rewarding. I can assure you, with the training and the experience you get at the Clinic, you will be able to thrive in any sub-specialty and be successful.
