We are a member of the National Intern Resident
Matching Program. Our program number is 196828.
Schedule of Service Rotations
Each academic year is divided into 13 four-week modules.
The first year focuses on learning the basics of pediatrics. First
year residents are exposed to inpatient pediatrics on the ward,
neonatal intensive care unit, normal newborn nursery, and the inpatient
cardiology service. Neonatal ICU rotations are served at MetroHealth
Medical Center. This 40-bed unit serves as the major neonatal referral
center for the Cleveland metropolitan area. It has high risk obstetric
services and both air and ground transport services. The first year
residents receive instruction in general pediatric ambulatory settings
during their block rotations on adolescent medicine, behavioral/developmental
pediatrics, outpatient general pediatrics and in the Cleveland Clinic's
Emergency Department. The Clinic's Emergency Department provided
care for over 11,000 pediatric emergency visits in 2001, with our
pediatric residents managing the majority of the pediatric patients.
The residents have one additional subspecialty module, with is usually
served on the pediatric neurology or the gastroenterology service.
In the second year, residents gain experience in the
pediatric subspecialities, and prepare themselves for the supervisory
role they will assume as senior resident. The Anesthesiology rotation
in the second year is structured to provide in-depth experience
in required procedural skills (untubations, IV access, lumbar puncture,
etc.) in a controlled environment, with direct guidance and supervision
by pediatric attendings skilled in those procedures. Residents in
the second year gain additional skills in caring for critically
ill patients as part of their NICU and PICU rotations. In addtion,
all residents complete a rotation in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
at the Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron during their
second year of training. This facility provides care for over 65,000
pediatric emergency visits each year, and is staffed around-the-clock
with pediatric emergency specialists. It has air and ground transport
systes, major trauma services and a burn unit. Residents choose
from several community based acute illness rotations in the second
year to gain exposure to outpatient general pediatrics ina variety
of settings. The residents gain inpatient supervisorty experience
during their night float and ward rotations. The junior resident
on these rotations are paired with experienced senior residents
to assist them in developing the management and teaching skills
they will utilize as seniors and attending. The remaining 5 modules
are open for residents to choose electives in the pediatric subspecialties.
Supervisory experience, teaching and the refinement
of skills are the emphasis of the third year of training. Senior
residents develop leadership skills during their three modules as
the ward senior resident. The seniors direct the ward team in teaching
and work rounds, serving as the primary teachers for the students
and interns on the ward team. Residents serve a similar leadership
role during the third year PICU, NICU, Cardiology and normal Nursery
rotations. An additional month of an emergency medicine experience
is obtained at the Clinic's main campus Emergency Department. During
the third year, the remaining five modules are available as elective
rotations, providing the residents an opportunity to fine tune their
training experience to meet their goals and educational needs.
The following schedules indicate the number of modules
in each rotation. Continuity Clinic is weekly in all postgraduate
years.
*In the PL-2, an elective month will include an Ambulatory
General Pediatrics month in either a Clinic Satellite, Private Practice
setting, or an Acute Illness Clinic.
