The same vitality that charges the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation carries through nearly every aspect of life in Greater
Cleveland. Cleveland offers a vibrant and versatile metropolitan
lifestyle that enhances the educational opportunities here.
The Arts
Adjacent to the Foundation's campus is University
Circle, the center of Cleveland's cultural life. Encompassing
525 acres, the University Circle area contains the greatest concentration
of museums, cultural activities and churches in the United States.
The Cleveland
Museum of Art houses one of the most highly acclaimed art collections
in the world. The internationally renowned Cleveland
Orchestra plays at Severance
Hall during the fall, winter and spring and at Blossom
Music Center, an outdoor amphitheatre, during the summer. The
Cleveland Playhouse, a premier repertory stage company, has
a multi-theater complex within three blocks of the Foundation. Big
name entertainers regularly perform at Blossom Music Center, the
downtown Cleveland Music Hall, and Gund
Arena at Gateway. The Cleveland Ballet and Cleveland Opera have
found permanent homes at Playhouse Square, a complex of three theaters
restored to their original 1920's elegance in downtown Cleveland.
The latest addition to Cleveland's cultural scene is the Rock'n'Roll
Hall of Fame, a lakefront museum which honors the greats of
Rock'n'Roll through memorabilia and multi-media exhibits.
Recreation and Sports
One of the most popular places for nightlife in Cleveland is the
Flats, an area of development on the Cuyahoga River. Restaurants,
night clubs, comedy clubs and shopping areas line both banks of
the river. Patrons may reach their favorite establishments by foot,
by car or by boat.
Those who love the outdoors will be captivated by
the Cleveland
Metroparks system which surrounds the Greater Cleveland area.
This park system includes the Cleveland Zoological Park and numerous
wildlife and forestry reserves which are linked by jogging, biking
and hiking trails. Northeastern Ohio has the fifth largest concentration
of parkland per capita in the nation. It is also known as the "Emerald
Necklace." Lake Erie offers bountiful opportunities for sailing,
fishing, waterskiing and swimming.
Major league sports are represented by Major League
Baseball's Cleveland
Indians and the National Basketball Association's Cleveland
Cavaliers. The Cleveland Indians began playing in the new Jacob's
Field Stadium in 1994 and enjoyed winning the American League Pennant
in 1995. The Cavaliers joined them in the new Gateway complex at
the Gund Arena in 1995. The newly established WNBA is represented
by the Cleveland
Rockers. Soccer fans enjoy the Cleveland
Force and professional hockey is played at the Gund Arena by
the Cleveland Lumberjacks. The Cleveland Revco Marathon has become
an annual downtown tradition and draws runners from all over the
world. National sporting events are held in tennis, golf, horse
racing and polo. For the active sports enthusiast, the area abounds
with public and private golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools
and cross-country and downhill skiing areas.
Educational Opportunities
Cleveland is surrounded by excellent school systems which rank among
the nation's best. Many fine private schools are also located within
the area. There are more than twenty universities and colleges in
the Greater Cleveland area, including Case Western Reserve University,
Cleveland State University, John Carroll University and Baldwin
Wallace College. Other major educational resources include the Cleveland
Art Institute, and the Cleveland Music Settlement School, both of
which are located minutes from the Foundation.
