Internal Medicine Residency Program

Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Cleveland Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Our program provides a comprehensive experience in academically oriented general internal medicine. Such training enables our graduates to pursue careers in academic or clinical general internal medicine, or to continue training in one of the subspecialties of internal medicine. The specific goals of the training program include:

To develop the intellectual and personal attributes necessary to promote professional growth and the skills necessary for lifelong learning.

To provide outstanding education in the diagnosis and management of medical problems spanning the spectrum of general internal medicine in the framework of humanism, professionalism, and the cost-effective practice of medicine.

To cultivate personal career development in each resident physician participating in the training program—to maximize the opportunities for residents to obtain practice opportunities or competitive fellowship program positions at the completion of their residency training.

The faculty of the Division of Medicine is uniquely suited to achieve these goals. They are full-time clinicians who are deeply committed to teaching both residents and students. The academic environment formed by the interaction of residents with faculty and medical students enhances patient care and fosters a vigorous learning environment. Many of the medicine faculty are nationally and internationally known for their research activities and continue this commitment by mentoring resident research projects.

The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University enrolled its first class of physicians in 2004. The Cleveland Clinic will be the main training site for these students. We are excited about the new opportunities this will bring to our program. In the past, we have been an academic center for both the Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

We believe that our enduring legacy will ultimately consist of the physicians whom we train in the practice of internal medicine. We invite you to browse through our program description. Your comments are welcome and we will be happy to provide additional information at your request.

Sincerely,
