About Us
The Department of Hematology & Medical Oncology is comprised of physicians, nurses, researchers, advanced practice providers (APP) and other healthcare professionals specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers or disorders of the blood. We believe in compassionate patient care and we will always put patients and their family members first.
Our world renowned physicians are national and international leaders in their specialty, and members of national treatment guideline committees. In addition to world class patient care, our providers are national or global leaders in cancer research, which include clinical trials and laboratory based research. We believe clinical trials will offer novel treatment options for patients with cancer and potentially improve cancer treatment for tomorrow. Our doctors play a major part in medical education by training the next generation of medical students, residents and fellows.
Cleveland Clinic Hematology and Medical Oncology includes several programs devoted to specific disease or treatments of head and neck cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, sarcoma, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, blood and marrow transplantation, disorders of the blood, and management of rare cancers. We provide services at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus as well as several regional locations throughout Ohio.
Cancer Programs
We believe that cancer care should be delivered by a team of specialists, which include, doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, genetic counselors, dietitians, etc. Our hematology and medical oncology specialists are an integral part of these multidisciplinary programs.
Some of the programs we support include:
Amyloidosis Center
Cleveland Clinic is dedicated to being a leader in patient experience, clinical outcomes, research, and education for patients with amyloidosis. Specialists in our Cancer Center and Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute work together to provide the most advanced treatment options for patients with amyloidosis.
Benign Hematology Program
The department offers evaluation, treatment, and consultative services in the field of benign and malignant hematologic disorders. The benign areas include disorders of:
- Red cells, white cells, platelets (eg: anemia, low platelets, or low or high white cells)
- Hemostasis and thrombosis (eg: bleeding or clotting issues)
- Genetic disorders, such as (eg: Thalassemia, porphyria, enzymatic disorders etc.)
- Diagnostic work up of symptomatic presentations, such as fevers, lymphadenopathy, and complications of solid organ transplantation.
Blood & Marrow Transplant
Cleveland Clinic’s Blood & Marrow Transplant Program is internationally recognized as a leader in the field. Autologous, allogeneic, non-myeloablative, bone marrow, peripheral stem cell and umbilical cord blood transplants are performed for patients with leukemias, lymphomas, and other hematological malignancies and bone marrow failure states.
Bone Marrow Failure
Dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), aplastic anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and other bone marrow failure conditions, the Bone Marrow Failure program has been recognized as a leader in pioneering diagnostic techniques and therapies by patient groups and national and international treatment and research organizations.
The Bone Marrow Failure program is led by nationally recognized physicians who work closely with specialty nurses and support staff to provide personalized, disease-directed care.
Brain Tumor
The Rose Ella Burkhardt Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center is a nationally recognized leader in the diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastatic spine, nerve, and brain tumors, and their effects on the nervous system. Annually, the Burkhardt Brain Tumor Center physicians record approximately 8,000 patient visits and perform more than 900 surgeries.
Breast Cancer
Cleveland Clinic's Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program is unique in its multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment, prevention and detection. Here, you will find a full array of services, from initial screening and diagnosis to innovative breast cancer treatment and supportive counseling.
Colorectal Cancer
Our multidisciplinary approach to colorectal cancer care unites specialists from across Cleveland Clinic, including surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, psychologists and oncologists.
Cleveland Clinic's team of colorectal specialists provides patients with personalized treatment plans and some of the best long-term outcomes in the world.
Esophageal Cancer
Cleveland Clinic’s esophageal cancer program brings together a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, gastroenterologists, and surgeons who use sophisticated diagnostic testing and work together to provide a customized plan of care along with supportive services for each patient.
Gynecologic Cancer
Gynecologic cancers affect a woman's reproductive organs, including cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. The American Cancer Society estimates each year, approximately 98,000 women are diagnosed with a cancer of the reproductive organ.
Head and Neck Cancer
Cleveland Clinic’s Head and Neck Cancer Program includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and head and neck surgeons who work together to develop an optimal treatment plan for each patient that will be most likely to preserve the patient's long-term quality of life. This means that in addition to recommending a treatment most likely to result in a cure, they consider the option that will have the least effect on important functions and on appearance.
Leukemia & Myeloid Disorders
The Leukemia and Myeloid Disorders Program provides access to innovative treatment options, recognized medical expertise, and dedicated support resulting in superior outcomes for patients with leukemia and myeloid disorders. These patients are evaluated and managed by a multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, nurses and social workers. The program offers patients clinical trials and works closely with the lab in developing new, innovative approaches to treatment.
Liver Cancer
Cleveland Clinic’s Liver Cancer Program includes hepatologists, radiologists, oncologists, liver and transplant surgeons, and specialized nurse coordinators – working together as a team. One call puts you in touch with our multidisciplinary team that works with patients who have benign liver tumors, cancerous liver tumors, cirrhosis of the liver and more in order to develop the appropriate treatment plan, aimed at preserving liver function and quality of life.
Lung Cancer
Our comprehensive Lung Cancer Program brings together a multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, pulmonologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, thoracic surgeons, and thoracic radiologists who collaborate to provide customized, coordinated care for patients. This collaborative approach allows us to focus our entire team’s expertise and energy on providing the best strategies for diagnosing and treating our patients.
Lymphoma
The Lymphoma Program is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary effort dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma; education and support of patients and their families; investigation of lymphoma pathobiology; and development of innovative treatments.
Melanoma
Cleveland Clinic’s Melanoma Program consists of a multidisciplinary team of pathologists, dermatologists, surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and others who work together to develop the optimal treatment plan for each patient.
Multiple Myeloma
Cleveland Clinic’s Multiple Myeloma Program offers the highest-quality care for diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma. Our physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs) and nurses involved in treating multiple myeloma and related disorders meet regularly to discuss each patient’s diagnosis, plan, and clinical progress, and to make decisions.
Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
Cleveland Clinic’s Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Program consists of a multidisciplinary team of dermatologists, Mohs surgeons, pathologists, facial plastic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and others who work together to develop the optimal treatment plan for each patient.
Pancreatic Cancer
Our Pancreatic Cancer Program unites pancreatic surgeons, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists and psychologists, who together work to customize the best possible treatment for patients and to help give them improved quality of life.
Rare Cancer and Blood Disease
Within Cleveland Clinic’s Rare Cancer and Blood Disease Initiative, our multidisciplinary approach is designed to provide you with the expert opinions of highly sub-specialized medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists focused on ensuring you are diagnosed properly before receiving treatment.
Sarcoma
Cleveland Clinic’s Sarcoma Program is a national and international resource for the diagnosis and treatment of adults and children with benign and malignant tumors of the bone and soft tissue. Sarcoma surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists come together to review patients with malignant and benign bone and soft tissue tumors.
Spine Tumor
Cleveland Clinic’s Spine Tumor Excellence Program STEP is dedicated to providing the highest level of care for patients with malignant or benign spine tumors through all phases of the treatment process.
Urologic Cancer Program
Cleveland Clinic medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, urologists, and other cancer specialists explore medical and surgical options to ensure the best possible outcome for each patient. Our doctors include fellowship-trained and internationally-recognized leaders in bladder, kidney, prostate, and testis cancer who are supported by an integrated team of experienced nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

We offer a number of clinical trials for patients with cancer. We believe that well designed clinical trials can be the gold standard for cancer treatment.
