The Annual CCF ResidencyCareer Day

Residents and fellowship program directors interacted in small groups, where individual questions could be addressed

The first annual career day was held on September 10, 2002. This annual event allows residents the opportunity to explore a variety of fellowship and general internal medicine career options.

Opening remarks offered general advice on how to strengthen oneself as a fellowship applicant. Subsequently, residents are given time to discuss career opportunities on an individual basis with program directors from the following subspecialties: Hematology/Oncology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Disease, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Rheumatology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care. Hospitalists and General Internists are also available to discuss job opportunities in General Internal Medicine. In addition to answering residents’ questions, each program director provided handouts outlining the application timeline, desirable applicant characteristics, and a list of faculty from their department including research interests.

The CCF career day allows residents to speak with many fellowship program directors in one session.

“As an intern, I felt it was great because it gave me a chance to approach all of the fellowship program directors at the Clinic. Not a lot of residents have an opportunity to hear, first-hand, what the directors in top-ranking fellowships have to say about choosing a career.” –Hector Medina, M.D.

Recent CCF graduates that have stayed for fellowship were also available to offer advice and guidance. (Tyler Stevens, Class of 2002, Gastroenterology Fellow)

“I felt it was extremely worthwhile to contact all of the fellowship program directors in a brief amount of time. I was able to get their opinion on several issues—what they expect from applicants, what we should expect in the application process, and what we need to do to optimize our candidacy and to plan for the future.” —Paul Gubanich, M.D.

With the participation of the Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Specialty Program Directors, the Internal Medicine residents have an opportunity to explore their options and to begin the groundwork for achieving their goals.
