Total Body Composition Analysis

Appointments
If you're like most women, you schedule your
physical approximately every three years, have a mammogram annually,
try to remember to schedule your pap test and maybe have your cholesterol
checked occasionally. Unless you've attended a women's health fair,
you probably haven't had a bone density test, and you may never
had a thyroid screening.
We understand that these tests and exams take time
- time that most of us don't have. Empowering women to take control
of their health, the specialists at the Women's Health Center have
created several women's health options, designed to be comprehensive,
convenient and female-friendly.
By choosing one of the options, all the scheduling
is done at at once at the same place, on the same day. There's no
need to make multiple calls to multiple departments. The screenings
and exams are performed on the same day at the Clinic's main campus,
so there's no need to make several trips downtown.
In addition to providing you with fast, accurate test
results, our Women's Health Center specialists can target, reduce
and help you eliminate health risks; identify potential women's
health issues; and share vital wellness information with you. Finally,
if additional testing, consultation or treatment is needed, you
have immediate access to Cleveland Clinic specialists.

Total Body
Composition Analysis for Women*
We are now offering a new, innovative, exact, non-invasive and quick
way to know your exact percent of total body fat vs lean body mass
at the Women's Health Center at the Gault Women's Health and Breast
Pavilion at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus.
For non-pregnant women** who want
to know what their exact body composition is, this can be determined
with Dual-Energy Total Body Scanning-the same technology that determines
bone mineral density.
For most women, knowing your height and weight and
calculated BMI (with the normal BMI range being 19-24.5) is sufficient.
An overweight BMI is over 27 and an obese BMI is over 30 and an
underweight BMI is under 18.
However, for some women-such as competitive athletes,
women with treated eating disorders who are not menstruating, women
on a training program to lose weight and improve muscle mass may
want to quantify and follow their body composition. In addition,
some very muscular persons, who are not overweight have artificially
raised BMI. In these situations, a total body composition/body fat
analysis may be very informative.
In general, a woman needs at least 20% body fat to
maintain a healthy state and normal menstrual function. However,
a body fat of over 33-36% is associated with increasing health risks.
It is not necessarily how much you weigh - it's how much of your
weight is body fat. Excess body fat has been linked to many serious
health issues such as heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes,
and the "metabolic syndrome." Learning your percentage
of body fat and reducing it with healthy eating and regular exercise
can lower your risks for heart disease, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and some cancers to
name just a few. Conversely, having too little body fat has also
associated with medical problems such as menstrual disorders, thin
bones, stress fractures, and infertility .... Come make an appointment
at A10 by calling 216/444-4HER.
The cost is approximately $249
for the scan and the analysis.
*This body composition analysis
is NOT covered by insurance.
**Women with breast or buttock implants and/or weigh
more than 270 pounds are not candidates for total body composition.
