Biographical Sketch

Dr. Thomas Rice is the Head, Section of General Thoracic Surgery, in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is board certified in general, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is Professor of Surgery in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, holding the Daniel and Karen Lee Chair in Thoracic Surgery. His specialty interests are general thoracic surgery, including esophageal, pulmonary, mediastinal, diaphragm and minimally invasive surgeries.

Dr. Rice received his medical degree from the University of Toronto after graduating with Honors with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. He did an internship at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and took a residency in general surgery at The University of Toronto before becoming a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco. Returning to the University of Toronto, he became Chief Surgical Resident. He was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic in 1986 as a staff surgeon, becoming head of the Section of General Thoracic Surgery in 1988.

Widely published, Dr. Rice has authored or co-authored hundreds of articles on his specialty interests in leading medical journals. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Rice is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the International Society for Disease of the Esophagus, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract,  the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
