Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Sudish Murthy is the Surgical Director of the Center of Major Airway Disease and a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He holds joint appointments also in the Cleveland Clinic Transplant Center and in the Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Center. He is board-certified in general and thoracic surgery. Dr. Murthy’s specialty interests include esophageal surgery, minimally invasive surgery such as broncoscopic, laparoscopic, and thoroscopic; general thoracic surgery and lung transplantation.

A native of California, Dr. Murthy received an undergraduate degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. He completed a Ph.D. in pathology at the University of British Columbia and went on to receive his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Merck Award for Outstanding Scholarship, the Loeb Award for Excellence in Medicine and the Janeway Prize for Top Achievement in the Graduating Class. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard University, continuing at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a resident and Clinical Fellow in cardiothoracic surgery. He completed his clinical training as a Fellow in the Department of Esophageal Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital Medical Center at the University of Hong Kong. In 2006, Dr. Murthy was honored as Alumni of the Year by the Division of Thoracic Surgery at  Brigham and Women’s Hospital at the Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Murthy’s research interests are currently focused on understanding tumor biology of thoracic malignancies, endobronchial radioactive stent implantation for malignant airway compromise, and pulmonary metastases of renal cell cancer, to name a few of his current research studies. In 2005, Dr. Murthy received the Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award

He has authored or co-authored a number of chapters in medical textbooks on his specialty interests and has published widely in leading medical journals on topics related to his clinical experience and research work.

Dr. Murthy is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the General Thoracic Surgical Club, the Esophageal Surgical Club, and Alpha Omega Alpha.
