Course Overview:

The training course in bench research will develop fundamental skills that are necessary to conduct high quality scientific experiments from scratch to completion. This course design is individualized for each candidate, and aims to teach each person the techniques to develop a hypothesis/ rationale, goal, specific aims and significance of a scientific bench project, organize their research work, conduct research by application of the relevant experimental techniques. The candidate will be trained to acquire skills necessary for data analysis. The candidate will also be able to acquire skills and ability to present and write the research data in a methodical, scientifically and statistically sound manner.

Each candidate, irrespective of their prior background, begins with a clean slate and will be closely mentored by our trainers. Throughout the course, candidates will resolve any prior misconceptions of conducting bench research which may have been a barrier to them in the past, as they now get comfortable to conduct hands-on research, with the guidance of the trainer.

With the step by step training that is provided, candidates will gain confidence to conduct the bench research and write the scientific paper in a clear and concise manner. This empowers the candidate to conduct quality bench research and produce excellent writing which can be published in peer-reviewed, high quality journals to highlight the research conducted.

Course objectives:

During the course each participant receives one-on-one training to learn how to:

  • Identify a research topic or research question
  • Design a bench research project
  • Conduct a systematic literature review
  • Develop a study hypothesis and study goals
  • Write the study background, significance and expected study outcomes
  • Identify the study methodology, equipment and supplies required
  • Prepare a flow diagram of the experimental design
  • Calculate sample size by Power analysis
  • Calculate the study budget
  • Prepare a data collection form
  • Apply for approval by the Institutional Review Board
  • Conduct the Pilot Study
  • Evaluate results
  • Troubleshooting
  • Complete the experimental phase
  • Analyze the data obtained
  • Present the results at departmental meetings
  • Acquire skills to write a scientific research article based on research conducted
Sample Course Schedule for Module 10

Educational teaching methods:

  • Interactive discussion and teaching sessions
  • Live lectures and multimedia presentations

Skills Developed:

Hard Skills – basic physiology and selected pathology of reproductive medicine, proficiency in basic and advanced tests and techniques required to conduct study

Soft Skills – communication and organizational skills, leadership and professionalism

Evaluation of trainee:

  • Knowledge / Theoretical Component (30%): Multiple choice questions on lab techniques linked to each course module, put together a proposal on their research topic
  • Practical Skills (50%): Tested on ability to demonstrate specific lab techniques taught during the training
  • Verbal Communication & Comprehension Skills / Integrative Component (20%): Present the results obtained from their research project as a PowerPoint talk with viva voce, and submit a Research Report on the Trainee’s findings
  • The performance of the candidate throughout the course will be reflected in a Grading Report [1], [2]
  • Candidates who meet the training requirements and successfully complete the course work will be awarded the Training Certificate
