Course Overview:

The training course in scientific writing will help develop fundamental skills set necessary to write high quality scientific articles from start to completion. This course is designed with the candidate in mind, and aims to teach each person the techniques to conduct an exhaustive review of the available literature using correct key words, review and organize the literature reviewed, synthesize relevant information, prepare and edit the drafts, compilation of bibliography, and review of checklist for submission to scientific journal.

Each candidate, despite their prior background, begins with a clean slate and will be closely mentored by our trainers. Throughout the course, candidates will resolve any prior misconceptions of scientific writing that may have been a barrier to them previously, as they get comfortable to pen their thoughts to paper, with the guidance of the trainer.

With the step by step training that is provided, candidates will gain the confidence to write their scientific paper in a clear and concise manner. This empowers the candidate to produce high quality scientific writing.

Course objectives:

During the course each participant receives one-on-one training to learn how to:

  • Conduct a systematic literature search using electronic databases
  • Compile the database search results
  • Review and screen abstracts identified through electronic search
  • Categorize articles in order of importance
  • Conduct scientific review of identified articles
  • Acquire ability to scientifically compose and present the significant findings of reviewed articles
  • Develop an outline of the proposed article (original paper / review / book chapter / research grant proposal)
  • Develop a strategy for scientific writing
  • Use reference management programs like EndNote
  • Prepare schematic figures, flow diagrams or tables
  • Edit and revise the draft of the manuscript
  • Selection of appropriate journal and review of journal instructions for manuscript submission
  • Finalize the manuscript for submission to the selected journal

Educational teaching methods:

  • Interactive discussion and teaching sessions

Skills Developed:

Hard Skills – basic physiology and selected pathology involved in reproductive medicine

Soft Skills – communication and organizational skills, leadership and professionalism

Evaluation of trainee:

  • Practical Skills: Trainees will be tested on the writing techniques taught during the training by having to write up a short article, from literature review until preparing it for submission to a journal
  • Verbal Communication & Comprehension Skills / Integrative Component (20%): PowerPoint talk on a topic linked to a course module and viva voce
  • Candidates who meet the training requirements and successfully complete the course work will be awarded the Training Certificate
