Certificate program in Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproductive Technology

 

The Manipal University, India and the Cleveland Clinic's Reproductive Research Centre, USA are conducting a unique Certificate Program in Clinical Embryology and ART. This three months long twinning program is designed to provide both theoretical understanding and practical training in various aspects of Clinical Embryology and ART. This course offers a practical based learning. It is specifically designed for Clinicians or Clinical Scientists interested in acquiring up to date knowledge in the area of Clinical Embryology and ART.

This is the first and only program of its kind being offered in whole of Asia. This twinning program consists of didactic lectures, discussions with experts, laboratory training and exposure to various practical procedures used in an ART Laboratory. The candidates will be admitted to this program in Manipal and spend the initial two months learning various laboratory aspects of Assisted Reproductive Techniques using animal model followed by one month of advanced training at the Cleveland Clinic. Successful candidates will be awarded a "Certificate of Training in Clinical Embryology and ART".

This program is available to the graduates with medical qualification (MBBS or MD) or science graduates (M.Sc). Other candidates may be selected based on their qualifications and background. The Manipal University is consistently ranked as one of the top comprehensive universities in India and the degrees from Manipal are recognized worldwide. The division of Reproductive Medicine offers a wide range of treatment programs for infertile couples seeking assisted conception. The pioneering technological improvements have made this centre as one of the most advanced facility of its kind for the treatment of infertility in all over India. Manipal University was the first and the only institution in India and in Asia to offer a "Masters Degree in Clinical Embryology". In addition, the University has a successful ART program for patients.

Cleveland Clinic is one of the world's second largest medical group practice and the largest hospital in Ohio (United States). It has a 1,000 staffed bed hospital, an independent research institute, medical school and a full fledged Reproduction Centre with a team of experienced embryologists, andrologists, reproductive endocrinologists (fellowship trained gynecologists), male infertility urologists, etc. Selected candidates are exposed to the latest technologies and provided training in various aspects of ART. Cleveland Clinic is a world leader in ART training and has been providing laboratory training courses in ART, Andrology and cryopreservation for several years. It has an excellent record of providing high quality training to candidates from across the globe.

  • Sperm preparation techniques
  • IVF using mouse oocytes
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) using mouse oocytes
  • Assisted hatching using mouse embryos
  • Sperm and embryo cryopreservation

Objectives:

This course provides a one-on-one comprehensive training in the clinical management and laboratory practices of IVF and ICSI. The syllabus covers the following areas:

Laboratory Training:

  • Micromanipulators: components and mechanics
  • Installing and aligning the ICSI instruments
  • Preparation of culture medium and dishes for IVF/ IVF-ICSI cases
  • Sperm preparation for IVF/ICSI
  • Classical IVF
  • ICSI: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
  • Oocyte handling
  • Embryo handling
  • Embryo culture
  • Extended embryo culture
  • Embryo scoring
  • Embryo loading
  • ICSI with micro HOS test
  • Pentoxifylline treatment
  • Assisted hatching (chemical)
  • Embryo biopsy
  • Embryo cryopreservation (mouse embryos)

Clinical Observation in an IVF Lab:

  • Observing IVF/ ICSI procedures
  • Oocyte retrieval
  • Oocyte assessment
  • Fertilization check
  • Embryo assessment
  • Intrauterine insemination

Discussion:

  • Equipments and supplies used in an IVF laboratory
  • Optimization of IVF lab procedures (quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, accreditation and documentation)
  • Sperm preparation techniques
  • Sperm selection
  • Ovulation induction protocols

Training Schedule:

  • The ART training in Cleveland includes, lectures by the Cleveland Clinic faculty from the departments of Gynecology, Urology, Endocrinology, Laboratory Medicine etc. on topics related to male and female infertility and assisted reproduction. Eligibility:

Graduates with medical qualification (MBBS or MD) or science graduates (M.Sc). Other candidates may be selected based on their qualifications and background.

Selection of students:

Selected candidates will be informed at least 4 weeks before the course commencement. They will be asked to submit 4 recent passport size photographs, degree certificate/provisional pass certificate issued by their university. In the event of admission, these documents will be retained by the University until the completion of course.

Course Fee:

The fee covers course syllabus in India and in Cleveland. Candidates will receive assistance in renting of subsidized accommodation in Cleveland. Working lunch is included in Cleveland but excludes travel, visa and medical insurance in USA. Visa:

Candidates enrolled for this program in Manipal should inform if they require an American visa.

Refund:

If visa is not granted for any reason the admission will be cancelled and the entire course fee refunded after deducting administrative fee as per university rules. For any withdrawal during the program, refund will be made as per the university refund policy and only letter of completion (number of days completed) will be provided.

Mailing instructions:

Send duly filled application form (Form 1 & Form 2) in the envelope addressed to the Deputy Registrar, Admissions on or before the last date along with certified copy of you graduate program.
