Module 1A - Routine Semen Analysis


 

Module 1B - Sperm Morphology


 
 

Course objectives:

Each participant receives one-on-one training to develop knowledge and skills in: routine semen analysis including proper specimen collection, measurement of volume, pH, manual sperm count, and motility using sperm counting chambers, and preparation of seminal smear for morphology.

  • Collection and delivery of semen sample 
  • Routine semen analysis
  • Computer assisted semen analysis (CASA)
  • Review quality control method for semen analysis
  • Proficiency survey for semen analysis

Course duration:

Participants receive 1 day of instruction in the following areas:

  • Demonstration of procedures
  • Laboratory training sessions - 8 hours
 

Course objectives:

Each participant receives one-on-one training to develop knowledge and skills in: sperm morphology by both Tygerberg's Strict Criteria and World Health Organization criteria for sperm morphology; preparation of slides and staining techniques.

  • Name and perform sperm morphology assessments by WHO and Kruger’s strict criteria (WHO 4th and 5th edition)
  • Distinguish the differences between the two morphology classification systems
  • Observe semen smear preparation and practice staining techniques
  • Review quality control measures

Course duration:

Participants receive 2 days of instruction in the following areas:

  • Demonstration of procedures
  • Laboratory training sessions - 16 hours

Educational teaching methods:

  • Interactive discussion and teaching sessions
  • Hands-on laboratory training sessions
  • Live lectures and multimedia presentations

Evaluation of trainee:

  • Knowledge: Multiple choice questions on lab techniques linked to each course module
  • Practical skills: Tested on specific lab techniques taught during the training
  • Verbal + communication skills: PPT talk on a topic linked to a course module

Each participant will receive:

  • Course syllabus with reading material and lab protocols
  • Free library access
  • Lunch tickets
  • Handbook of Andrology by American Society of Andrology (CD)
  • World Health Organization - WHO Laboratory Manual for the examination of human semen and sperm-cervical mucus interaction. Fifth Edition (CD)
  • Certificate of training (issued upon successful evaluation by the instructor)
