Course objectives:

During the course each participant receives one-on-one training to develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Collection and delivery of semen sample 
  • Routine semen analysis
  • Computer assisted semen analysis (CASA)
  • Sperm morphology assessment
    (WHO and Tygerberg strict criteria)
  • Fructose detection in seminal plasma
    (qualitative assessment)
  • Vitality testing (Eosin-Nigrosin stain)
  • Hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOS)
  • Leukocyte detection (Peroxidase staining/ Endtz test)
  • Special sperm stain (NF-PICS) for azoospermic samples
  • Antisperm antibodies detection (SpermMar test)
  • Quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing in andrology laboratory
  • Safety guidelines for andrology laboratory

Educational teaching methods:

  • Interactive discussion and teaching sessions
  • Hands-on laboratory training sessions
  • Live lectures and multimedia presentations

Evaluation of trainee:

  • Knowledge: Multiple choice questions on lab techniques linked to each course module
  • Practical skills: Tested on specific lab techniques taught during the training
  • Verbal + communication skills: PPT talk on a topic linked to a course module

Each participant will receive:

  • Course syllabus with reading material and lab protocols
  • Free library access
  • Lunch tickets
  • Handbook of Andrology by American Society of Andrology (CD)
  • World Health Organization - WHO Laboratory Manual for the examination of human semen and sperm-cervical mucus interaction. Fifth Edition (CD)
  • Certificate of training (issued upon successful evaluation by the instructor)

Course duration:

Participants receive 1 week of instructions in the following areas:

  • Discussion and lectures - 8 hours 
  • Laboratory training sessions - 32 hours
