The Department of Regional Radiology was developed to supplement the services provided by community radiologists with the sub-specialized expertise of Cleveland Clinic radiologists.
Rapid electronic image transmission allows sub-specialized radiologists at the Clinic’s main campus to provide consultation while examinations at distant sites are still being performed – not after the patient has already left the department. This level of accessibility allows patients to receive world-class imaging services without leaving their own neighborhood.
Whom do we serve?
The Department of Regional Radiology currently provides radiological services for four community hospitals – Lakewood Hospital, Ashtabula County Medical Center, Marymount, and Lutheran Hospital – and the Cleveland Clinic family health centers. All of the hospitals and health centers are staffed with experienced general radiologists, most of whom also have subspecialty training. These radiologists are based at their respective hospitals and health centers in order to provide continuity of care and to develop close working relationships with their referring physicians.
The Department of Regional Radiology provides image interpretation and management services for several freestanding imaging centers.
In order to provide our outside imaging centers with the level of radiological care and expertise equivalent to that provided at our main campus, we have developed a system to integrate outside centers into our routine workflow.
How do we integrate outside imaging centers?
Each facility is electronically linked with Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, thus allowing immediate transfer of images. Examinations are scheduled and clinical information entered using our radiology information system. The information is then immediately available to the Clinic radiologists without the need for sending any printed documents via mail or fax.
Once examinations are performed, images are interpreted by sub-specialized radiologists. Reports are then transcribed into the radiology information system and immediately printed at the outside imaging centers for distribution to referring physicians. It is anticipated that reports and selected images will be available to referring physicians via the Internet in the near future.
Will everyone receive the same quality?
To ensure that the quality of examinations performed at our affiliated outside imaging centers is equal to that performed at the Cleveland Clinic, all examination protocols are designed and monitored by Clinic radiologists. In addition, the outside imaging center’s technologists train at Cleveland Clinic with Clinic technologists.
The Section of Outside Business also offers management services and billing and marketing expertise to affiliated hospitals and imaging centers, if desired.
