In the midst of a family or personal crisis, the need for professional assistance may be obvious. At other times, continued difficulty in functioning at work, home or school may require careful assessment and treatment. Specialists in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology treat a wide range of symptoms and problems, including:
- High levels of stress, including work-related stress and stress caused by other factors
- Changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, loss of interest in pleasurable activities and other symptoms of depression
- Chronic, high levels of worry and anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Avoidance of social situations and difficulty leaving the house
- Preoccupation with cleanliness
- Overly strict rules and rituals that interfere with daily functioning, such as hand washing and counting
- Intrusive thoughts and worries
- Hearing or seeing things other people don’t hear or see

Many, but not all, insurance plans cover the services offered by the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. Financial counselors within the Department can help with questions about insurance coverage.
