The Cleveland Clinic Medical Genetics program includes
testing, counseling, education and referral services. A child
may be referred to the program for many reasons, such as:
Presence of a major birth defect such as cleft
palate or spina bifida
Mental retardation or developmental delays
Prenatal exposure to a dangerous chemical such
as alcohol, dilantin (used to control seizures), or cocaine
Abnormal stature for age (too tall or too short)
Heart defect present at birth
Family history of a genetic defect
Unusual behavior patterns
When an underlying genetic condition is identified
and a diagnosis is made, the problems can be treated in a more
organized and efficient way.
