Catherine Opie wanted "the piece to be a source of meditation and contemplation in which the viewer can be transported on a visual level as they either move past the piece or choose to sit with it".

A patient wrote directly to the artist: "I walked past that series of photographs nearly four times a day," while her daughter was in the hospital for an extended period. "Your photos helped me. They were my only escape from the sadness and fear that I faced every day. I can’t wait to show them to my daughter when she gets older."
