Dr. Vasella has been CEO of Novartis since the merger that created the company in 1996. Novartis' introduction of Gleevec in 2001 marked the entry of the first tyrosine kinase inhibitor and set the standard for the prototypical targeted cancer therapy. Gleevec is one of the Top 10 biologic drugs with annual revenues of $3.7 billion.
