Patrick Schamasch, MD
Medical and Scientific Director, International Olympic Committee
For over 25 years, Dr. Patrick Schamasch was tasked with ensuring the wellbeing, ethics, and equality of all competing Olympic athletes. Starting as a Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission in 1987, Dr. Schamasch became the Medical and Scientific Director of the IOC in 1993. In addition to his work with the IOC, he has been active as an advisor for the Arab Sports Confederation; the All Africa Games; the South Asian Federations Games; and as Chair of the medical commission of “Jeux de la Francophonie” in Ottawa-Hull in 2001 and Niger in 2005. He attended medical school at the University of Montpellier in France and gained expertise in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of sports. After serving nearly two decades as Medical and Scientific Director, Dr. Schamasch retired from the IOC following the 2012 London Games.
