Gene Barnett, MD,  Professor & Director, Neurological Institute

Dr. Barnett is responsible for establishing the multidisciplinary Brain Tumor and Neuro-oncology Center of the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute. As its Director, he oversees and coordinates the clinical and research direction of the brain tumor. Dr. Barnett is recognized as a leader in the area of surgical navigation and its application with minimally invasive surgery. These accomplishments have helped lead to The Clinic’s CAMIS (computer-assisted minimally invasive surgery) project, a multi-million dollar effort supported by federal and industry funding aimed at improved surgical patient care at reduced costs through the use of advanced computer and minimally invasive surgery techniques. He is currently working on development of advanced surgical navigation systems, laser interstitial thermal therapy and neurosurgical robotics.


Ernest Borden, MD,  Deputy Director, Taussig Cancer Institute

Ernest C. Borden obtained his medical degree from Duke University and joined Cleveland Clinic in 1998 to direct the Center for Cancer Drug Discovery and Development. In 2005, the 5 laboratories in the Case Western Reserve Cleveland Clinic College of Medicine were integrated to form the Center for Hematology and Oncology Molecular Therapeutics (CHOMT) with Dr. Borden named as Director. He is also a staff member in the Department of Solid Tumor Oncology and a Professor in Cancer Biology in the Lerner Research Institute. Dr. Borden has an international reputation for research and treatment of melanomas and sarcomas and has been listed in Best Doctors of America for the past 10 years.


Mihir Desai, MD,  Director, Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute

Dr. Desai is Director of the Stevan B. Streem Center for Endourology at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute of Cleveland Clinic, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr Desai’s clinical and research interests include stone disease, upper-urinary-tract obstruction, and laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the kidney, adrenal, prostate and bladder.


Jennifer Hunt, MD,  Section Head, Department of Anatomic Pathology

Dr. Hunt started her career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center practicing head and neck and endocrine pathology, and running the active and innovative Molecular Anatomic Pathology laboratory at UPMC. In 2006, she was appointed as the Director of Surgical Pathology at Cleveland Clinic and Associate Professor at the Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Hunt’s research interests have focused on head and neck and endocrine tumors, with an emphasis on developing molecular approaches to improving tumor diagnosis and assessment of prognosis.


Eric Jelovsek, MD,  OB/GYN and Women’s Health Institute

Dr. Eric Jelovsek is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Section of Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He is the residency site director in OB/ GYN and Director of Surgical Education. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University in 2003 and completed a fellowship in Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. His research interests include: surgical education, bowel and anorectal disorders in women, and quality of life in women suffering from both pelvic floor disorders.


Samir Kapadia, MD,  Heart and Vascular Institute

Samir Kapadia, MD, is an interventional cardiologist in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology and interventional cardiology. As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Kapadia has a special interest in coronary, structural heart disease-related cardiac interventions as well as carotid and peripheral interventions.


Richard Lang, MD,  Vice Chairman, Wellness Institute

Richard S. Lang, MD, MPH, Vice Chairman of the Wellness Institute and Head of the Section of Preventive Medicine, is a staff physician in the Executive Health Program. He joined Cleveland Clinic in 1986. Dr. Lang is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine, and is a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Preventive Medicine. He also is qualified as a Federal Aviation Administration medical examiner to perform Class I, II and III medical certification examinations of pilots.


Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD,  Staff Surgeon, Heart and Vascular Institute

Dr. Mihaljevic is part of a multi-disciplinary team of health care providers who specialize in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and transplant medicine. His interests include minimally invasive cardiac surgery, image-guided cardiac surgery, robotics in cardiac surgery and mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement. Prior to his Cleveland Clinic appointment, Dr. Mihaljevic was the Director of Cardiac Surgery Research and an Associate Surgeon in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.


Marc Penn, MD, PhD,  Staff Cardiologist, Heart & Vascular Institute

Dr. Penn is a staff cardiologist in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Penn is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine. He has a special interest in myocardial ischemia, vascular biology, cardiac critical care and stem cell and gene therapy for the regeneration and recovery of myocardial function. Dr. Penn has developed drug delivery systems for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, including studies to optimize gene therapy and stem cell therapy for the regeneration of myocardial tissue from which several patents are pending.


James Young, MD,  Chairman, Academic Department of Medicine

Dr. Young is Professor and Chairman, Academic Department of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Chairman, Endocrinology and Metabolism Institute. He is also Physician Director of Institutional Relations and Development and a Medical Director of the Kaufman Center for Heart Failure. He holds the George and Linda Kaufman Chair and is the Study Chairman of the NIH, FDA, and CMS Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Assist Support INTERMACS). He has a joint appointment to the Multi-organ Transplant Center. Dr. Young is certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as the subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease and holds medical licensure from the states of California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
