When should I arrive at the Cleveland Clinic?
The International Center is open from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, however there is 24 hour “on call” service available for emergencies. The International Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Intercontinental Hotel and Conference Center located on Carnegie Avenue; enter from East 100th Street just north of Carnegie. See the map of the Cleveland Clinic campus for more information.

If you arrive at the Cleveland Clinic on a weekday, please come to the International Center immediately. If you arrive on a weekend, stop in as early as possible on Monday morning to register. You must be registered prior to any appointments, and we will verify your medical appointment schedule and discuss whether any special precautions (such as fasting) must be taken before testing or surgery can be done.

How do I make an outside telephone call from Cleveland?
Making a phone call in the U.S. is easy. All phone numbers have ten digits, three which indicate the geographic area where the telephone is located (area code), and seven which belong to the home or business.

If you need help with local, long-distance or international calls, call the AT&T Language Line service at 1-800-628-8486*. The call is free, and an operator will help you in your native language.
* You must use an international 800 access code when dialing from outside the United States of America.

Local (Cleveland area) Calls
Cleveland has three area codes: 216, 330 and 440. The Cleveland Clinic is located within the 216 area code. When dialing a phone number from the Clinic, be sure to check the area code. If it is 216, only the last seven digits are needed. If it is 330, 440 or any other area code, all ten digits must be dialed.

Long-Distance Calls
Any phone number with an area code other than 216, 440 and some 330, is considered long-distance. You will be charged for the call. When dialing a long-distance number, first dial 1, then the area code, then the seven-digit number.

Calls to area codes 800*, 877* and 888* are free.
* You must use an international 800 access code when dialing from outside the United States of America.

International Calls
Calls to Canada, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and most other Caribbean countries should be dialed like a long-distance call, using 1, the area code and the seven-digit number.

To call another country, dial 011 for an international line, then dial the country code, city code and phone number. You can find a list of country and city codes within the first few pages of any U.S. telephone book (white pages).

If you have an international calling card, please refer to the back of the card for instructions.

What is the best way for my family to get a message to me when I am a patient in the Cleveland Clinic hospital?
The best way to reach a patient at the Cleveland Clinic is to call (216) 444-2000 and ask for the patient’s room. An English-speaking operator will be able to connect you. If you do not speak English, call the International Center at (216) 444-6404 and an interpreter will be glad to assist you with the call or the message. The International Center is open between the hours of 7:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m from Monday through Friday.

How do I mail packages and letters?
The front desk at your hotel will be happy to assist you in mailing packages and letters by express mail.

What are the taxes and tipping customs?
Local sales tax is 7 percent on most purchased items, including food served in restaurants.

Tipping is used to show appreciation for a service rendered. A tip of 15-20% of the final bill before tax is expected in most restaurants and for room service. It is not included unless stated on the menu and the bill.

If you have any questions about whether or not tipping is appropriate in a particular situation, please ask at the International Center.
