Recognized as a World-Leader in Patient Care
Cleveland Clinic is one of the nation's most prestigious healthcare organizations, built on a commitment to international leadership and top quality patient care, education and research. The Cleveland Clinic's Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute is the recognized world leader in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. U.S. News and World Report has rated our heart program the #1 program in the nation every year since 1995. In the most recent America's Best Hospitals Survey, we had the best patient outcomes among all hospitals in the survey, and also received the highest scores available for Advanced Technologies and Patient Services. Additionally, two out of three doctors who responded to the survey ranked Cleveland Clinic among the best for treating difficult conditions- besting the runner-up by more than 15%.

Treating Heart Failure at Cleveland Clinic
Cleveland Clinic offers complete care for heart failure. Our team of experts stands ready to manage and treat your condition. This team includes cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, electrophysiologists, and specialists in cardiovascular imaging. They work together to determine the nature and cause of your heart condition, and provide an optimal treatment plan for your specific case and your personal needs.
Treatment Options
Medical Management
Our specialists are able to slow the progression of heart failure using the most advanced medications. Plus we have research access to new inotropic drugs, new vasodilating drugs, and new diuretics for heart failure treatment.

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
We have devices to manage your heartbeat, including biventricular pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) to prevent dangerous arrhythmias. These devices can improve heart function, quality of life and decrease mortality in appropriate patients with advanced heart failure.

Heart Transplant Program
Our Heart Transplant Program team is recognized as a leader in the field. We are the number one center in both Ohio and the Midwest, and have the third largest program in the United States. Our team performed 60 heart transplant surgeries in 2008 alone.

Excellent Outcomes - As reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, 93 percent of heart transplantion patients at Cleveland Clinic were alive one year after transplant, compared to the 88 percent expected survival rate (based on the characteristics of both the recipient and donor and the experience of similar patients in the United States). The three-year survival at Cleveland Clinic is 90 percent compared to the 82 expected survival rate nationally . These excellent results demonstrate the outstanding multidisciplinary care in our team of heart experts.

Mechanical Circulatory Device Support
These devices, such as LVADs, can keep you alive in an emergency, as a bridge to transplant, or as permanent support. Our experience with mechanical support means you have access to the most appropriate device for your physiology and condition. In 2008 alone, we implanted 49 mechanical circulatory assist devices.

High Quality Care for Patients
Hospitals and doctors are not all alike. They vary in quality due to differences in their training, experience and services. Differences in quality matter more when you need sophisticated medical care for a complex condition like heart failure, cardiomyopathy, or congestive heart failure. The doctor and hospital you choose will have a direct impact on how well you do. Cleveland Clinic has always been a strong advocate of informing patients about specific data related to finding quality hospital care. We believe that informed patients are able to participate better in their own care.
