Each year, the members of the Invasive Cardiology Section at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center see thousands of patients seeking help with the diagnosis and treatment of almost every kind of heart disease known to man. Our interventionalists treat people of all ages from around the world who are dealing with serious, sometimes life-threatening, cardiac conditions. We provide care for problems as common as a bout of chest pain (angina), as serious as a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or transient ischemic attack ("mini-stroke"), or as debilitating as severe claudication (leg pain during exercise).
The quality of our care and excellence of our outcomes are well-known and respected in the medical community. Almost half of our patients are referred to us by physicians at other facilities, many of whom actually could do the procedure indicated, but feel it could be more safely done at the Clinic. The section is at the very forefront of innovation in cardiovascular medicine, oftentimes heading up the clinical trials studying the newest techniques and devices for restoring heart health with catheter-based interventions.
The Invasive Cardiology Section offers the latest, most technologically advanced diagnostic tests and treatments for atherosclerosis, using stents, angioplasty, ultrasound techniques, brachytherapy, emboli-protection devices, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), angiogenesis, and gene therapy, for example. Our physicians have one of the largest practices in the country for fighting restenosis, the reblockage of previously cleared arteries.
