The American Lung Association recently released
a report grading each state’s efforts in four areas:
tobacco prevention and control spending, smoke-free
air, cigarette taxes and youth access. Ohio improved its
grade, from an "F" to a "D", in the tobacco prevention
and control spending category. Each of the other areas
still received an "F".
Even though Ohio’s funding for tobacco prevention
and control has increased, the grades show that Ohio
still faces serious problems in the tobacco control battle.
And with the threat of more state budget cuts on the
horizon, it is more important than ever to protect existing
programs and fight for additional funds for tobacco
prevention programs.
A lot of work is still needed to reduce tobacco use
and related diseases. Programs funded by the Ohio
Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Foundation
(TUPCF) are making a difference in youth attitudes
about tobacco. But without increased funding, some
vital programs may be short-lived and others may not
get started at all.
What can you do to help? You can write or call
your state senator or representative and let them know
that funding tobacco prevention programs is important
for your children. You can find
their phone numbers in your local
newspaper, call the Senate Hotline
1-800-282-0253, or visit

can make a difference!
