What students have to say about Word of Mouth

The following statements are excerpts from letters received from fourth grade students in Hancock County:

“Thank you for coming to our school. The information you told me I told my dad. He smokes too. He decided to stop because of the information. My family is doing all they can do to help him. Thank you so much for the talk you gave my class.”

“Thank you for teaching me about what smoking can do to me. If some of my friends start smoking, I’ll tell them what you told me. I promise I’ll never smoke.”

“I learned a lot of good things... You told me that smoking can blacken our lungs. You also told me that if you are around someone who is smoking, you can get sick. You taught us all about our lungs and what can happen if you smoke. When you came I was glad, because now I know that cigarettes have tons of chemicals.”

“Thanks for coming! I had a great time. You really taught me not to smoke. Now if someone wants me to smoke, I can say, ‘No thanks’ or ‘I have to be somewhere’. One small puff can really slow you down fast. It won’t help you reach your goals.”

“Thanks for teaching all of us about tobacco. I learned that tobacco can hurt your lungs. You taught me that one cigarette has 4,000 chemicals. I learned that cigarettes have a lot of nicotine. You have taught me to say ‘no’ to smoking. I should always walk away. My goal is to never start smoking.”

“I never knew smoking could do all these bad things to you. Three things smoking could do to you is it could make you weak, slow, and more than these two, tobacco will make your lungs black from tar and your breath will stink. It will give you cancer...or you could hurt someone else’s health.”
