Cleveland Clinic Florida Surgeon Steven D. Wexner Appointed Medical Expert for the Agency for Health Care Administration

Steven D. Wexner, M.D., chief of staff at Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston and chair of the Department of Colorectal Surgery, was recently appointed a medical expert for Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration. During his two-year term, Dr. Wexner will be responsible for rendering expert medical advice regarding specific cases, medical devices and new treatment modalities.
AHCA is responsible for administering the state’s Medicaid program, as well as regulating nearly 19,000 health care facilities and 25 health maintenance organizations operating in Florida.
“Dr. Wexner joined Cleveland Clinic Florida when it was founded in 1988 and has been instrumental in establishing CCF as a national leader in the research and treatment of colorectal disease,” said Melinda Estes, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “We are proud that Dr. Wexner has been invited to serve AHCA in the capacity of medical expert, where his 20 years of experience will contribute to the agency’s efforts to ensure access to affordable, quality healthcare.”
Dr. Wexner specializes in laparoscopic surgery, cancer of the colon and rectum, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. He served as the division chair for Research and Education at Cleveland Clinic Florida and is the program director for the Colorectal Surgery Residency Program. Widely published, he has authored nine books and hundreds of abstracts and articles on colorectal disease and is on the editorial boards of 10 medical journals and peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Wexner is also active in numerous U.S. and international professional societies, including serving as chair of the Colorectal Surgery Advisory Council for the American College of Surgeons, on the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons’ executive council, and as secretary of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
A graduate of Columbia University, Dr. Wexner earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York. He completed his advanced training in general surgery at Roosevelt Hospital in New York and his advanced training in colorectal surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
