    QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DATABASE APPLICATION
  1. What things in the database will I be able to specify in order to identify my availability?
    When you complete your personal profile you will be able to specify;
    • The best way to reach you
    • The best time to reach you
    • The program type in which you would like to teach (e.g., LPN, ADN, BSN)
    • Your preference for Clinicals, Classroom, Skills Lab, etc.
    • You will also have the ability to inactivate your profile when you are not available to teach

  2. Do I need to reenter my profile every year?
    No. You will only need to update your profile with changes; any certifications that you may have achieved, degrees completed, etc. You will be sent periodic reminders to do so.

  3. I have already accepted a position to teach with a school of nursing. Do I still need to complete a personal profile in the database?
    Yes. Your agreement with the school is for that particular course. In order to participate in the comprehensive matching functionality of the database application you will need to complete a personal profile in the Faculty Initiative database.
  4. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  5. Will this assignment be a part-time job beyond my regular position?
    Yes. Most people will be hired directly by the schools. Under special circumstances, an employee might be released from their regular responsibilities to teach for a school.

  6. Who will pay my salary and how much will I be paid?
    You will be paid directly by the school, with the exception of the special circumstances mentioned above. The pay rate for each school varies, however, in general the salaries are comparable as some schools include time for preparation, while others pay for the number of hours you are with students.

  7. What happens when I am scheduled to teach but my “supervisor” won’t let me because the patient census is such that everyone is needed on the floors?
    In essence you are taking this as a second job. It is your responsibility to manage your schedule and your commitment to both the school and your workplace.

  8. Are the students practicing under my license when I am acting as their clinical instructor?
    NO. Although the students are your responsibility to monitor and supervise, their actions are the students’ responsibility. It is imperative that you assess the students’ capabilities, select appropriate learning experiences and supervise accordingly. The academic institutions’ policies regarding liability insurance vary. Liability insurance may be provided by the institution hiring the nurse as faculty or it may be your responsibility to secure coverage. Students are encouraged or mandated to carry liability insurance that offers protection from wrong-doings.

  9. How long in advance will I know if a school needs a clinical instructor?
    Ideally, you will be notified 6-8 weeks prior to the beginning of clinicals, however these times will vary. Schools often have last minute openings.

  10. Can I act as a clinical instructor on the floor/unit I normally work? Can I act as a clinical instructor in a different hospital/unit?
    This depends on your personal comfort level and the needs of the school.

  11. What will be my responsibilities in evaluating the students?
    In general;
    • Providing a grade for clinical performance. Clinical is commonly graded as P/F or S/U
    • Writing an evaluation of the student
    • Grading student papers
    Refer to job description.

  12. QUESTIONS ABOUT RESOURCES
  13. What type of training will be provided to me to acquaint myself with this new role?
    Each nurse who chooses to participate will be expected to attend the basic faculty development program offered through the Deans’ Roundtable Faculty Initiative. This is a one day orientation to general teaching/learning principles as well as an orientation to the role and expectations. There will also be an orientation by the particular school for which you are working. When you are selected to act as a clinical instructor in a course, you will be oriented to that specific course, including clinical objectives. You will also need to spend time orienting to the unit if it is unfamiliar to you.

  14. Who will be available to me as a resource person while acting in this role?
    There will be an assigned contact person from the course you are teaching who will be available via cell phone or pager. Generally this person is the course coordinator and will be able to answer questions and lend guidance during your time as a clinical instructor.

  15. How do I learn more about clinical instruction?
    There are several resources where you can learn more about clinical instruction.
  16. GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE INITIATIVE
  17. Why is Cleveland Clinic partnering with the Northeast Ohio Schools of Nursing in the Deans Roundtable Initiative?
    The Deans’ Roundtable Faculty Initiative is designed to impact both the nursing and nursing faculty shortage. We seek to create both faculty opportunities for our nurses as well as increase the number of students who can be accepted into nursing programs at the participating schools.

  18. Who is eligible to participate?
    In summary, the State of Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) requires a minimum of a BSN to teach in the clinical environment or skills lab and the minimum of an MSN to teach in the classroom.

  19. What kinds of positions are available?
    This will vary from semester to semester. However, the majority are part-time clinical instructor positions.

  20. What are the benefits to taking one of these positions?

  21. WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD I EXPECT EACH SCHOOL TO PROVIDE ME?
  22. What type of orientation do the students receive in preparation for their clinical experience?
    The students will be expected to be familiar with the policies and procedures for their specific assigned hospitals and units. They will also have general orientation (fire, safety, etc.) to the facilities. This may be the responsibility of the clinical instructor.

  23. How will I know what the particular group of students is capable of doing?
    This information will be included in the orientation to your course.

  24. Who will be available to me as a resource person while acting in this role?
    There will be an assigned contact person from the course you are teaching who will be available via cell phone or pager. Generally this person is the course coordinator and will be able to answer questions and lend guidance during your time as a clinical instructor.

  25. Will I need to attend any meetings/orientations sessions on the campus of the school I’m teaching for?
    Yes. Expectations vary from school to school and facility to facility, but there are some meetings you will be expected and encouraged to attend. The schools are sensitive to your other obligations when setting these expectations.
