The Cole Eye Institute staff includes a team of vision researchers committed to understanding genetic-based eye diseases. It is known fact that genetic defects cause retinitis pigmentosa in its myriad of forms - a retina disease, Stargardt's disease, Best's disease and many other diseases that annually rob hundreds of thousands of people of their vision. Through understanding the genetic mutations that cause eye diseases, our scientists someday will develop the means to block malfunctioning genes and change the course of disease. Ultimately, the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute will participate in finding the cures for eye diseases that now, sadly, are labeled untreatable.
