The Clinical Decision Unit is a twenty bed, 23 hour observation unit, that includes 8 monitored room & 7 telemetry rooms. We provide care for a variety of patients with multiple diagnosis. Our primary patient population comes from the Cleveland Clinic emergency department& Kaiser Permanente emergency department.
We care for patients as young as 2 month of age, there is no age limit otherwise. The primary diagnosis we see in the Clinical Decision Unit are those that are cardiac related (chest pain, CHF), pulmonary (asthma, COPD, pneumonia), Vascular (TIA, CVA), ect. Many of our patients have chronic and/or multi system diagnosis.

The medical management of of the Clinical Decision Unit is provided by the Cleveland Clinic for its patient population & Kaiser Permanente for their patient population. Both services readily utilize a variety of consultation services. The fact that CDU operates as a 23 hour observation unit helps to mandate the timeliness of response to consult request.

The CDU currently does not have a acuity system. RN staff are require to take critical care classes (including cardiac rhythm interpretation) & successfully complete an assessment of this content. RN staff must be ACLS certified (within one year of hire date) & maintain that certification. The RRT staff must be ACLS, PALS, & NALS certified  ( ). The CDU also utilize a Clinical Technician role for completing technical duties (phlebotomy, performing ECG's) as well as direct patient care providers. The Cleveland Clinic Emergency Department is considered our "sister unit". All CDU staff is cross trained to work in the Emergency Department as well.
