Downloading Citations into RefWorks from Ovid or PubMed
Direct Export from Ovid
- Run your search in the selected Ovid database.
- Scroll down to browse through the first ten results. Click on Next Results to continue browsing.
- Select the result(s) to export by clicking in the box(es) to the left of the reference(s).
- Scroll down to the Results Manager menu at the bottom of the reference display.
- Under Results, choose Selected Results.
- Under Fields, choose Complete Reference.
- Under Result Format, choose Direct Export. Do NOT check Include Search History.
- Under Action, click on Save.
- Choose Export Results to RefWorks, click Continue.
RefWorks will automatically open, and your citations will download into the "Last Imported Folder". Check that all the information is correct. Move the citations to an existing folder or create a new folder. You may also wish to add a descriptor of your own choosing to identify these citations. This can be especially helpful if you have citations that are included in different folders. If you add a descriptor, use the "descriptor search" option to retrieve a list of references.
Downloading Citations from Ovid -- (NOT Direct Export)
- Run your search in the selected Ovid database.
- Scroll down to browse through the first ten references. Click on Next Results to continue browsing.
- Select the reference(s) to export by clicking in the box(es) to the left of the reference(s).
- Scroll down to the Results Manager menu at the bottom of the reference display.
- Under Results, choose Selected Results.
- Under Fields, choose Complete Reference.
- Under Result Format select Ovid.
- Under Action, click on Save.
- Pick Windows style linefeeds.
- Click Continue. Save file to disk (be sure to remember the directory)
- Give your file a name and select Text document.
- Open RefWorks if not already open and click 'Import' on the
Tool Bar.
- From dropdown menu Filter/Data source, choose OVID.
- Choose 'Import Data from the following Text File.'
- Click 'Import.'
Citations will download into the 'Last imported' folder. Check
that all information is correct. Move the citations to an existing folder or
create a new folder. You may also wish to add a descriptor of your own choosing
to
identify these citations. This can be especially helpful if you have citations
that are included in different folders. If you add a descriptor, use the "descriptor
search: option to retrieve a list of references.
Downloading Citations from PubMed
- Perform a PubMed search.
- Change the 'Show' pull-down menu to reflect the number of citations
you have retrieved.
- Place a checkmark in the box against the citations you wish to save,
or save all the citations.
- Change the 'Display' pull-down menu to select MEDLINE as the format.
- Change the 'Show' pull-down menu to select a number higher than the
number of citations you wish to download.
- Change the 'Send to' pull-down menu to select 'Text'.
- Click the 'Send to' button and citations will display in a new
window.
- Click 'Edit' on the toolbar, then 'Select all', click 'Edit',
then 'Copy'.
- Open RefWorks, if not already open and click 'Import' on
the Tool Bar.
- From dropdown menu Filter/Data source, choose 'NLM PubMed'.
- Choose 'Import Data from the following Text'.
- Paste citations in the box
- Click Import.
Citations will download into the 'Last Imported' Folder. Check that all information
is correct. Move the citations to an existing folder or create a new folder.
You
may also wish to add a descriptor of your own choosing to identify these citations.
This can be especially helpful if you have citations that are included in different
folders. If you add a description, use the 'descriptor search' option to retrieve
a list of references.
