Locating Media
What is in the media collection, and where is it?
Return to top of page
The collection contains slides, audio CDs videotapes, CD-ROMs,
and DVDs for clinical instruction, lecture support and personal education. Please
ask library staff for help with the slides and videotapes. The
CDs and DVDs are located
on the shelves on the side wall next to the book stacks.
How can I search for items from the media collection?
Return to top of page
You are welcome to browse the collection to select the materials you'd like to use or borrow. All the items in the collection are included in the online library catalog, so you can search for the various forms of media the same way that you search for print material. If you use the keyword search, you can restrict your search to just the format (CDROM/INTERNET, VIDEO/SLIDE, AUDIO/SPOKEN, or SOUND RECORD) that you are looking for. It is also possible to search for material in any format that is located in the Learning Resources Center or the CD/DVD collection using the keyword search.
Does everything from the media collection circulate?
Return to top of page
Most of the media does circulate. Some
audio-visual
material is on reserve in the Workroom. Ask at the desk to use that material,
which can only be used within the library. Any item with a red dot on it
does not circulate, but must be used in the library. The circulating material
may be borrowed for three weeks and can be renewed for up to 4 additional 3 week
periods if nobody has requested it, and it isn't overdue. A renewal request
must be placed before an item becomes overdue; overdue material cannot be renewed
and must be returned to the library.
Can I use things from the media collection in the library?
Return to top of page
Study rooms are available to view videos, DVDs and slides. Ask at the front Service Desk for access to these rooms. Any CD or DVD that does not need to be installed to run can be used on any of the library computers. Headphones can be borrowed at the front desk so you do not disturb others in the library when you use these materials.
How and where can I view videos of surgery online?
Return to top of page
Prerecorded webcasts of surgical procedures are available from the National Library
of Medicine. These are actual operations performed at medical centers in the
United States since January 2004. The videos are one hour in length. These are
recordings, not live broadcasts, so you cannot send in questions via email even
if that is said during the video.
RealPlayer is needed to view the videos. Headphones are required to view the videos in the library. RealPlayer is installed on the 10 computers in the Learning Resource Center, and on the computers in Study Rooms B and C.
These videos are available from home. Click here (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/surgeryvideos.html) to go to a page listing all the available videos.
Where can I find an image for a presentation?
Return to top of page
You could find images for a presentation either from the Media Collection or images.MD. Please ask library staff if you need assistance or have questions regarding copyright for the use of the images.
