Visiting Residents and Fellows FAQ

What Is A Visiting Resident/Fellow?

A visiting resident or fellow is a trainee currently in a U.S. GME training program who rotates at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation during their elective time to work with a particular staff physician or perhaps gain experience in an area not offered at their institution.
What Is The Process For Becoming A Visiting Resident Or Fellow?
The GME Department (as well as individual staff physicians) receives hundreds of requests for Visiting Resident/Fellow rotations each year. In order to assure requests do not conflict with other training in a department, applications for all visiting residents and fellows should be forwarded to the GME Department. The request will be recorded in our database and forwarded to the program director in the department the rotation is being requested. After reviewing your credentials and other training commitments (the number of rotators and medical students, etc), the program director will apprise GME of the department’s ability to accommodate the request. The approval process takes approximately 4-6 weeks GME will notify you if your request cannot be accommodated or send a letter of appointment for the rotation once it has appropriate approval.
What Qualifications Do I Need To Become A Visiting Resident/Fellow?
All Visiting Residents or Fellows must currently be in an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship and have approval from their program director to rotate at CCF.
What Can I Do As A Visiting Resident Or Fellow?
The Level of responsibility for each visitor will be determined by the supervising physician in conjunction with the program director approving the rotation.
What about Malpractice Insurance?
In order to assume any patient care responsibilities, we have been advised by our Legal Department that visiting residents must produce proof of liability coverage from their home hospital for the rotation at the Cleveland Clinic Health System. This should be a letter from an official of your institution on letterhead or a copy of the actual policy verifying liability coverage during the time period of the Cleveland Clinic rotation. This must be done prior to arrival or your status will be that of an observer only during your visit.
What Type Of License Is Required For A Visiting Resident/Fellow Rotation?
You are required to provide a copy of either your permanent Ohio license or a copy of an Ohio training certificate issued by the State Medical Board of Ohio prior to beginning a rotation. Trainees from outside of Ohio are advised to apply early; this process takes approximately 4-6 weeks. You will NOT be able to function as a visiting resident or fellow if your Ohio licensure information is not provided; you will function as an observer only until this information is received. Information on Ohio licensure may be found at: http://www.med.test.ohio.gov/index.htm.
How Do I Apply To Be A Visiting Resident/Fellow?
Simply complete the Visiting Resident application and send to GME with the following: CV, USMLE score report, Medical School Diploma (as well as translation if not in English), and a copy of your valid ECFMG Certificate (if an international medical graduate). Your current program Director must authorize your rotation by signing the application.
