Neurology Residency Program

Neurological disorders seriously affect a large and varied patient population, from a child learning to cope with epilepsy, to young men and women facing the crippling effects of multiple sclerosis in the very prime of their lives, to the elderly slowly fading away from their families under the burden of Alzheimer's Disease. For these patients and many more, help depends on the experience and training of a qualified neurologist and neurology staff in conjunction with a medical facility offering the latest in current technology and research.

  Program Objectives

The goal of the Cleveland Clinic Florida Neurology Residency Training Program is to graduate first rate neurologists with the clinical skills, judgment and experience to diagnose and treat patients within the full range of neurological disorders, and to provide them an opportunity to pursue clinical research in a field of their choosing.

  Program Description

We have designed our program to provide residents a thorough education in all aspects of adult and pediatric neurology with emphasis on training of a solid, competent clinical neurologist capable of pursuing any avenue of neurologic practice, be it academic or clinical practice.

Our three-year residency program accepts two residents a year at the PGY-II level, following the required prerequisites set forth by the ACGME. PGY I is not offered. The resident is assured of receiving a thorough education in all aspects of neurology. Residents are involved in both inpatient and outpatient services at the Clinic in addition to adult neurology, pediatric neurology and neuropathology. Exposure also involves neurosurgery, psychiatry, neuropathology, neuro-ophthalmology and specialties involved in the medical diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders as well as those that mimic neurological disorders.

Elective rotations are available in neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-radiology, neurophysiology, sleep disorders, EEG, movement disorders, stroke and clinical research.

Training in adult neurology and electives takes place in Fort Lauderdale and is enhanced by weekly videoconferences with the Department of Neurology at the Foundation in Cleveland. The required three-month rotation in pediatric neurology takes place at Miami Children's Hospital, Miami, Florida. The required three-month rotation in neuropathology takes place at the Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. The Clinic assumes the cost of transportation to and from Cleveland and for housing during the training period.
