Eric Topol, M.D.

Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine

Dr. Topol is provost and chief academic officer of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is also chairman of the department of Cardiovascular Medicine and professor of Medicine. He serves as director of the Joseph J. Jacobs Center for Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, vice-chairman of the department of Molecular Cardiology and co-director of the Heart Center.

Dr. Topol has been elected to the American Association of Physicians and American Society of Clinical Investigation. He is a Fellow, American Heart Association; Fellow, American College of Cardiology; Fellow, American College of Physicians; Fellow, European Society of Cardiology; Fellow and Trustee, Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and Fellow, American College of Chest Physicians. The program he directs at The Cleveland Clinic in Cardiology has been ranked Number 1 by U.S.News & World Report for the past 10 years.

Dr. Topol has served as a principal investigator for more than 15 international multi-center research trials, including GUSTO I-V, TAMI 1-9, the IMPACT trials, EPIC, EPILOG, EPISTENT, PURSUIT, PARAGON, CAVEAT, TARGET, SYMPHONY I, II and many others, with cumulatively more than 190,000 patients enrolled. He was the first physician ever to administer recombinant t-PA and 2 different platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors to patients. The results of these large-scale trials, involving 40 countries around the world, have substantially changed our approach to patients with acute myocardial infarction, percutaneous coronary interventions and unstable angina.

Currently Dr. Topol serves on the editorial board for over 30 peer review medical publications including Circulation, Circulation Research, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Cardiology, British and the European Heart Journals . He has over 800 original publications and has edited 16 books, including the Textbook of Interventional Cardiology (1st - 4th editions) and the Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine (now in it's second edition).
