Fawzy G. Estafanous, M.D., D.A., F.F.A.R.C.S., F.A.C.C.

Dr. Estafanous is known for having built one of the foremost cardiac anesthesiology departments in the country. Under his supervision, this group was the first to describe and report hypertension after myocardial revascularization. In a later effort, the group conducted comprehensive clinical assessments of new opioids in cardiac anesthesia. These efforts produced two international conferences on this topic.

In 1986, Dr. Estafanous made a commitment to setting up a program covering acute and chronic pain management, as well as pain research and education. A little more than a decade later the Department of Pain Management at The Cleveland Clinic has become one of the top pain management programs in the country.

In 1995, Dr. Estafanous was instrumental in establishing the Center for Anesthesiology Research, a 4000 square foot research laboratory in which researchers and clinicians pursue both basic and clinical research relevant to the practice of anesthesia.

Dr. Estafanous was one of the early presidents of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesia and a former president of the "invitation only" Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists. He has published two books on opioids in anesthesia, as well as edited the classic Textbook of Cardiac Anesthesia, now in its 2nd edition.

Dr. Estafanous has given numerous lectures and key note presentations at national and international forums and has editorial responsibilities on national and international peer review journals, including the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine.
