SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION TO THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Office of Civic Education Initiatives (OCEI) Summer Internship Program (SIP) is an intensive, nine (9)-week, paid summer internship that provides top science, business and creative students throughout the Northeast Ohio region with the opportunity to work and learn alongside world-renowned Cleveland Clinic (CC) physicians, researchers and other healthcare professionals in a variety of fields.

PROGRAM INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

During this program, as an intern, the student will spend individual time at a facility of the Cleveland Clinic or appropriate designated site with an assigned mentor in their assigned location1. The Program places chosen students in selected CC locations for the nine (9)-week duration of their program during the summer under the direct supervision of a CC employee or designated supervisor in their assigned location. The student may also work with other CC and designated site employees in that same location. While there, the student will function as a member of that area's work team and be responsible for the tasks assigned, based on skills and training by their CC mentor or designated site mentor, as well as for the conduction of their own research project.

EMERGENCY CARE

In the event the student is, or becomes ill during the course of the program, injured, sick, pregnant, or otherwise impaired, the student shall immediately notify the CC Office of Civic Education Initiatives so their participation in the program can be properly modified as necessary;

If the student is injured, or requires first aid or emergency treatment while at any CC facility, designated site or attending an official OCEI activity, CC agrees to make reasonable efforts to immediately seek said treatment and to notify the parent/guardian that such treatment is necessary - parents/guardians shall be responsible for payment to CC for such care, CC is not obligated to provide any other/additional medical or surgical service to the student.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION MUST BE PROVIDED AS PART OF THE APPLICATION.

INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM START AND END DATES

PLEASE NOTE: OUR PROGRAMS REQUIRE A COMMITMENT TO THE FULL DURATION STATED FOR THE PROGRAM WITH NO TIME OFF ALLOWED. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND PROGRAM ORIENTATION DURING THE LAST WEEK OF MAY, 2013, AND PROGRAM GRADUATION ON AUGUST 2, 2013.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION AND TERMINATION POLICY

Cleveland Clinic (CC) and/or the Office of Civic Education Initiatives (OCEI) may terminate a student's participation in any and all activities at CC related to this program or any other activities and programs available through our partnerships as a result of lack of competence, conduct or behavior which is considered by CC to be a breach of OCEI Student Code of Conduct, CC policies or detrimental to patient care. Both student and parent/guardian agree that the due process rights accorded the student pursuant to their home School District and Board of Education Student Handbook shall not be applicable to such termination.
