What is the Office of Civic Education Initiatives?
The Office of Civic Education Initiatives was established to fulfill Cleveland Clinic's commitment to promote education throughout the Northeast Ohio region. In partnership with area schools, local businesses, and fellow nonprofit organizations, the Office creates innovative programs designed to enhance children's learning in the areas of math, science, health and wellness, the arts, and innovation.
What is the purpose of the NEOREMA Internship Program?
The Northeast Ohio Research Education Medicine Alliance (NEOREMA) is an innovative collaboration between Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, and Oberlin College. Launched to increase the participation of under-represented groups within the biomedical sciences, NEOREMA provides year-round educational programming for American Indian or Alaskan Native, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, underprivileged, or first generation college students.
As regional leaders in research, education, and medicine, our alliance institutions recognize the importance of developing and training Northeast Ohio's next generation of biomedical leaders. We're committed to providing the education, support, and access necessary to ensure program participants can achieve their dreams of becoming physicians, researchers, and allied health professionals without leaving home.

How do I apply?

When is the application deadline?
The deadline to submit an application for the 2013-14 NEOREMA Internship Program is 4:30 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2013. NO APPLICATIONS OR SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT DATE AND TIME.
What is the application process?
Is the science portfolio/project required as part of the application packet?
No. The science portfolio/project is optional.
When will students find out if they were selected for the program?
All students submitting an application will be notified via U.S. mail/email regarding their status during the first few weeks of February.
When does the program start and end?
PLEASE NOTE: OUR PROGRAMS REQUIRE A COMMITMENT TO THE FULL DURATION STATED FOR THE PROGRAM WITH NO TIME OFF ALLOWED. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND PROGRAM ORIENTATION DURING THE LAST WEEK OF MAY, 2013, AND PROGRAM GRADUATION ON AUGUST 2, 2013.
All years must commit to the fall activity (one Saturday in either September or October, 2013).
AND the spring curriculum (one Saturday per month, January through May of 2014).
What is the pay rate?
NEOREMA Year One and Year Two:
During the summer, Year One and Two students are paid by stipend. Students that successfully complete summer programming will receive a one-time, $500.00 payment that will be mailed to their home address a few weeks AFTER the final program date in June.
The fall activity is unpaid.
Students that successfully complete the spring course will receive a one-time, $125.00 stipend that will be mailed to their home address a few weeks AFTER the last class in May.
NEOREMA Year Three:
During the summer, Year Three students are paid every two weeks. The hourly wage is $7.75 an hour.

Are there related events or activities with required attendance?
Is lunch provided?
Lunch is not provided. It is the responsibility of the student.
Is transportation provided?
Transportation is not provided. It is the responsibility of the student. However, for select activities that are considered part of the curriculum, Cleveland Clinic reserves the right to provide and require the usage of the provided transportation. Students and parents/guardians will be notified of such arrangements as appropriate.
Are the participants allowed time away during the summer?
The summer program is an intense, one-of-a-kind opportunity designed to provide a unique learning experience. Students accepted into the program are expected to commit to the full duration of the program and are expected to attend each day. Other conflicting activities (sports, band, cheerleading, family vacations, etc) are NOT valid excuses for a student to miss part of programming.
What if a student becomes ill?
In the event the student becomes ill, injured or otherwise impaired, the student shall immediately notify the Office of Civic Education Initiatives to assess continuation in the program.
What if there is inclement weather on the morning of one of the program days?
In the case of inclement weather (storms or hazardous conditions as declared by the local and/or national weather service), the Office of Civic Education Initiatives will execute emergency notification procedures. Notification will be made by telephone and e-mail (if a valid e-mail address is on file) to inform parents/guardians and students of cancellations due to these conditions. Every effort will be made to make notification in a timely and efficient manner. It is, therefore, imperative that students immediately notify the Office of Civic Education Initiatives of any changes to their contact information or that of their parent/guardian.
Can a student participate in sports/band/cheerleader camp or other activities that conflict with the dates/times of this program?
Students accepted into the program are expected to fully commit to the year-round events/activities and may not miss any portion of the program due to a conflict with another commitment.
What if I need to take the SAT and ACT?
We understand and value the importance of students taking both the SAT and ACT tests. However, students will not be excused from participating in the NEOREMA Program for this purpose and must schedule to take these tests on alternative dates that do not conflict with the NEOREMA Program dates. Is there a dress code for the NEOREMA Internship Program?
All Cleveland Clinic employees are required to follow the dress code policy. Participants of the program must adhere to the Cleveland Clinic Personal Appearance Policy. A copy of the policy will be provided upon acceptance into the program.
FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THE DRESS CODE POLICY WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION FROM THE PROGRAM.
Does it cost anything to participate in this program?
There is no tuition to participate in this program. Personal expenses such as lunch and transportation are the responsibility of the participant and their family.
Will my child be provided a uniform to wear?
All NEOREMA Internship Program participants are required to follow the dress code policy. All students will receive a polo-style shirt and a program lab jacket to be worn during each day of the summer program, orientation and the graduation event, the fall activity, and spring curriculum.
Participants of the program must adhere to the Cleveland Clinic Personal Appearance Policy. A copy of the policy will be provided upon acceptance of the program. Failure to adhere to the dress code policy will result in termination from the program.
Can we plan a family vacation?
We understand the significance of quality family time. However, students must to be able to commit to the all program events/activities without interruption.
Are students permitted to have their cell phones on campus/during off-site activities?
The use of cellular phones can interfere with and disrupt the functioning of medical equipment. Cellular phones must be turned off and stored in the participant's purse or backpack while on any Cleveland Clinic property. Cellular phones may only be used outside of the buildings or in the building cafeterias. The use of cellular phones during sessions and activities is prohibited.
What if I need to reach my child regarding a family emergency?
The program manager will provide participants with available numbers for use by parents/guardians should such emergencies occur.
Does this application process require any time away from school?
We will make every effort to schedule events around school hours whenever possible. However, the student must complete the interview process and their physical according to our schedule. Applicants will be scheduled for interviews based on interviewers' availability. Students selected for the program are required to undergo a pre-employment physical. These medical exams will be scheduled according to appointment availability.
What does the student Final Project need to focus on?
During the summer all students will be required to complete a Poster Project. NEOREMA Year One and Year Two students will focus their posters on their educational and career goals, and their experience in the program. Year Three students will focus their posters on their summer research project. More detailed information on the Poster Projects will be shared during orientation, and throughout the course of the summer program.
There will be no Final Project due for the fall activity.
During the spring all students will be required to complete a final project based upon the theme of the spring curriculum. More detailed information on the Final Projects will be shared during the first class of the spring session, and at subsequent classes.
Do I have to follow the template for the Poster Project?
Yes. The template is used to ensure continuity in the information presented. All Poster Project boards are printed and mounted by Cleveland Clinic Center for Medical Art and Photography.
Where will students be required to present their Poster Projects?
Students are required to present to program staff, invited guests and/or team members at the culminating experience event. Once they return to school, they are expected to present to various classes, community groups, school boards, senior leadership groups at Cleveland Clinic, and to other identified groups upon request.
