Proper hand hygiene is one of the most underappreciated areas in healthcare procedures. Employees' hand hygiene compliance can be improved by giving an in-service presentation that reviews the implications for hand hygiene, the percent of hand hygiene compliance in each patient area and a hand-washing demonstration using Glogerm.
Methodology
Active surveillance of 11 areas of the hospital with patient beds was conducted to monitor whether employees sanitized their hands properly. An in-service was done after the first set of surveillances, then data were collected again during active surveillances.
Outcomes
Hand hygiene in-service can improve hand hygiene compliance. Active surveillance of the hand hygiene compliance level is a good way to determine employee compliance.
