Shattered, based upon Kathleen Cawley's studies, displays fatigue in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. I painted a breast cancer patient showing signs of fatigue and chemotherapy by including hair loss and bags under her eyes. There are incision lines down the face, contrasting between a healthy woman's face and the ill woman's body. The smashed dishes on the woman's breasts symbolize the shattering of her everyday life. Among the shattered ceramics are jewels, representing what was once beauty. In the space to the right of the patient are tumor cells, bringing the composition together.
