Artist's Statement

This piece represents how Chiari malformation and tethered cord tie a person up and hold them down. The cerebellum wrapping itself around the person is tying them up so they can't do anything, and the chains are holding the person down and opening their back to a distorted spinal column, showing how painful tethered cord can be. The person is pulling their back skin apart to show that they want the pain to be fixed. The stitch on the back of the head represents the fixing of the Chiari malformation. I decided to make the background black because I wanted to show how they are in the dark about their condition since there is so little information on it. I also decided to highlight some colors around the cerebellum, body, and chains because I wanted to bring out the colors I used in them. Then, between the body and the highlights, I made a light blue sky scene to show the person is coming out of their pain through all of their struggles.
