An Intervention to Improve Compliance with Viewing the Patient Safety Video in Pediatrics
Hypothesis
In 2007, the Children’s Hospital Safety Video was created to educate patients/families on topics including room safety, hand
hygiene, parental rights, hospital protocol, and infection control. This video is an important tool to assist in meeting the
National Patient Safety Goals while educating patients/families. However, recently the percentage of patients/families watching
the Patient Safety Video has dropped. We hypothesized that a brochure distributed upon admission would increase compliance.
Methodology
Current Children’s Hospital procedures were reviewed and interviews of nursing staff were conducted to learn how viewing of the
Patient Safety Video typically was initiated. We then developed a brochure to alert patients/families to the importance of the
video. Patients/families received the brochure upon admission to the Children’s Hospital.
Outcomes
Patient compliance in watching the Patient Safety Video improved by up to 16% following introduction of the brochure. With the
brochure, compliance no longer solely depends upon verbal instructions from the staff to inform the patients/families about
the video. Further improvements in compliance may be possible through additional methods, but in the meantime a significant
percentage of patients and their families are benefiting from increased viewing of the safety video.
