Reducing Family Stress: In An ICU Setting
Hypothesis
The 25-bed combined medical-surgical Intensive Care Unit contains multiple alarm systems, a call light system, ventilators, and other equipment whose presence can influence the reactions of family members entering the ICU. The hypothesis of this study is that lack of knowledge about the environmental happenings in the ICU elevates stress of family members—and that education can reduce stress levels.
Methodology
Potential sources of stress from the ICU environment were identified by interview of family members of ICU patients. An educational video was produced and shown to a separate cohort of family members. The participants were surveyed for suggestions to improve the DVD via questionnaire.
Outcomes
The 9-minute video elicited feedback by family members on how to improve the video. Key factors that reduced stress levels were identified. Overall, family members became more comfortable within the ICU as they attained more knowledge about the unit.
