Correlation between Patient Breast Surgery Results and Oncotyping
Hypothesis
Oncotyping assesses tumor markers to predict risk of recurrence in patients with breast cancer. The resulting recurrence score may be used to guide patient decision-making such as whether to undergo chemotherapy. The present study assessed how many patients with breast cancer qualify for oncotyping tests.
Methodology
Patients on surgery/radiology/ultrasound schedules were identified, and patient data entered onto a spreadsheet to determine if the patients qualified for oncotype testing. Qualification criteria include early stage invasive breast cancer in women who are estrogen receptor (ER) positive and lymph node negative.
Outcomes
Of the 6 patients studied, 3 did not qualify for oncotype testing because the type of cancer was angiosarcoma, DCIS, or lobular carcinaoma in-situ. The remaining patients with high grade infiltrating ductal carcinoma or invasive ductal and lobular carcinoma were ER negative. In summary, none of the patients with breast cancer qualified for the oncotyping test. The study is continuing, with enrollment goal of 24 patients.
