Validation Study of Nursing Quality Indicator Audit
Hypothesis
The purpose of this study was to determine whether nursing quality indicator audits are reliable tools for measuring quality care in the nursing units towards patients. We hypothesized that the original Quality Indicator Audits done by the staff nurses would be replicated by the Intern (blinded) audits.
Methodology
Chart audits completed during the first quarter of 2008 were reviewed and re-audited using the identical Audit tool that is used by the staff nurses. After completing the blinded audit, results were compared with the original audit results. This study included 100 medical records of patients admitted to the following Medical Surgical units at Lakewood Hospital: 1B- Medical Oncology; 3C- Telemetry; 4E- Surgical; 3D- Progressive Care Unit.
Outcomes
The most universal discrepancy in the audit was the pain score being completed over the last 24 hours. A larger group of patients would be needed to confirm the results of this pilot study in order to determine more accurately whether the nursing quality indicator audits are reliable tools for measuring quality care in the nursing units towards patients.
