Artist's Statement

My painting was inspired by Laura Ouellette's research on a breast cancer test called oncotyping. In the test, they take samples of breast tissue, represented by the puzzle pieces placed on this women's chest, and test them. To show how cancer can be hidden or unknown to you, I covered her left eye and painted the background gray because you can't always see what's in the dark. And I painted the right side white, so awareness can be your flashlight.
