Artist's Statement

I made this piece in the shape of a kidney because renal cell carcinoma is cancer of the kidney cells. I used the colors and patterns that appear during immunohistochemical staining for CA9, showing both positive and negative results. I used the beads to represent the carcinoma of the kidney. Overall, though, I wanted this kidney to look pretty and uplifting because I wanted to emphasize how beneficial the CA9 testing is. The CA9 testing aids in the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma without surgery and is an accurate measurement of a patient's prognosis.
