Artist's Statement

I chose to make jewelry in response to this topic. I bent, flattened, and soldered sterling silver wire to shape the “nerves.” The metal represents the strength of the nerve cell in order to survive the initial severing, yet the wire is delicate to relay the fact that the nerves are quite sensitive. The blue crystals represent the healthful signal revived by protein 1. The orange crystals represent the barrier created when nerves are severed and the signal cannot cross from one nerve cell to the other.
